6. Processing Substrate and Spawn (Oct. 2024)

For the cultivation of oyster mushrooms, substrate is collected. This undergoes various processing steps to make it suitable as a growing medium for the cultivation of oyster mycelium (oyster fungal threads). After the substrate is prepared, mycelium is added and spawn is obtained.

To prepare the spawning (substrate inclusive mycelium) the following activities were carried out:

  • Sorting the substrate to remove impurities.
  • Soaking the substrate thoroughly, ensuring it was fully saturated.
  • Un-soaking the substrate
  • Fermentation
  • Steaming the substrate for sterilizing
  • Adding mycelium (Inoculating spawn)
